एक ऐतिहासिक खोज — गांधीसागर अभयारण्य, वनमण्डल मन्दसौर में दुर्लभ ‘स्याहगोश’ की उपस्थिति दर्ज
गर्व और प्रसन्नता के साथ साझा कर रहे हैं कि दिनांक 01 जुलाई 2025 को गांधीसागर वन्यजीव अभयारण्य में कैराकल (Caracal caracal) जिसे स्थानीय रूप से स्याहगोश कहा जाता है, की उपस्थिति कैमरा ट्रैप में दर्ज की गई है।यह मांसाहारी प्रजाति अत्यंत शर्मीली, तेज गति से दौड़ने वाली और सामान्यतः रात्रिचर होती है। यह मुख्यतः शुष्क, झाड़ीदार, पत्थरीले और खुली घास भूमि वाले इलाकों में पाई जाती है। भारत में अब यह प्रजाति विलुप्तप्राय श्रेणी में रखी गई है और इसकी उपस्थिति बहुत ही दुर्लभ मानी जाती है।
वनमंडल मंदसौर में लगाए गए कैमरा ट्रैप में एक व्यस्क नर कैराकल की उपस्थिति दर्ज होना न केवल जैव विविधता की दृष्टि से महत्वपूर्ण है, बल्कि यह अभयारण्य में संरक्षित आवासों की गुणवत्ता और संरक्षण के प्रति हमारी प्रतिबद्धता का प्रमाण भी है।
➡️ कैराकल की उपस्थिति यह दर्शाती है कि गांधीसागर क्षेत्र के शुष्क और अर्द्ध-शुष्क पारिस्थितिक तंत्र अब भी इतने समृद्ध और संतुलित हैं कि वे इस दुर्लभ प्रजाति को आश्रय दे सकते हैं।
➡️ मध्यप्रदेश में पिछले कई सालों में किसी संरक्षित क्षेत्र में कैराकल की पुष्टि हुई है — यह पूरे प्रदेश के लिए गर्व की बात है।
➡️ यह खोज न केवल वन्यजीव शोध के लिए अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण है, बल्कि हमारे संरक्षण प्रयासों की सफलता का भी प्रमाण है।
इस उपलब्धि के लिए मध्यप्रदेश वन विभाग एवं गांधीसागर वन्यजीव अभयारण्य के समर्पित अधिकारियों और कर्मचारियों का विशेष धन्यवाद। इनके निरंतर प्रयासों से क्षेत्र की विविध पारिस्थितिकी संरक्षित रह पाई है, जिससे आज यह अभयारण्य दुर्लभ प्रजातियों के लिए भी एक सुरक्षित आश्रयस्थली बना हुआ है।
A Historic Discovery — Rare Caracal (Siyah Ghosh) Sighted in Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary, Forest Division Mandsaur !!!
We are delighted to share that on 1st July 2025, the elusive and critically endangered Caracal (Caracal caracal), locally known as Siyah Ghosh, has been camera-trapped in Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary, Madhya Pradesh.
The Caracal is a highly secretive, solitary carnivore known for its agility and speed. It is typically found in arid and semi-arid landscapes, preferring scrublands, rocky outcrops, dry grasslands, and open woodland habitats. Once relatively widespread, sightings in India have become extremely rare in recent times and it is now listed as a critically endangered species in the country.
This individual — an adult male — was captured on camera in the area of the sanctuary, under the Mandsaur Forest Division.
➡️ The presence of this rare predator reflects the ecological richness and habitat integrity of Gandhi Sagar — a landscape that still supports lesser-known, threatened species.
➡️ With this, Gandhi Sagar becomes the first and only known site in Madhya Pradesh where the Caracal has been officially recorded, in past few years.
➡️ This is a matter of great pride for the state and an important milestone in India’s conservation landscape.
Such a rare sighting is not a coincidence but a result of meticulous habitat protection, continuous monitoring, and scientific management. I sincerely appreciate the unwavering dedication of the Madhya Pradesh Forest Department and the hardworking field staff of Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary, who have ensured that the sanctuary’s diverse habitats remain intact and capable of supporting even the most elusive wildlife.
